Snow Day!

Today the college was closed, so I got to stay home from work and hang out with Mia. I took her for a walk around the neighborhood and we went to the park to play in the snow. She ran around a little bit, then she started digging furiously. She eventually found a piece of cardboard which you can see she was really excited about!

I think I need to slow down...

I feel like I've been getting sick since Friday. I've been coughing and sneezing up a storm. The coughing is the worst. It hurts! I thought maybe if I got a humidifier it would help me, which it did for the first night. But this morning I woke up at 6am (an hour before I needed to) and was coughing. I finally let my boss know I would be coming in late, and tried to sleep a little more. I got maybe another half hour. I don't know if that made me feel better or worse.

Tonight I'm going home for dinner, then coming back to work. Tomorrow I'll be at work until at least 8pm. And Thursday, I'll go home then come back. I feel exhausted just thinking about it.

Harry Potter Trivia

This weekend we all decided we need a Harry Potter movie marathon. Emily, Ben, Dane, and I were SO bummed when they moved the release date from November to July for the sixth movie. What better way to make ourselves feel better than reliving the first 5 movies?

Of course, Dane and I can't just leave it at watching the movies. Dane came up with the idea to sort everyone that comes over to watch into their respective house (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and the dreaded Slytherin). Then I thought it would be fun to play trivia in between the movies, and Dane suggested the teams could be members of the same house! Tonight we're going to make trivia cards. I'm looking forward to it.

Here's some trivia for you all! Don't look at the answers until you've tried to answer it yourself.

Q: What did Professor Lockhart bring into his first class at Hogwarts?

A: Blue Cornish Pixies.

Q: What form does Kinglsey Shacklebolt's patronus take?

A: A Lynx.

Q: What kind of car is Mr. Weasley's flying car?

A: Ford Anglia.

Q: Who was the headmaster of Hogwarts before Dumbledore?

A: Armando Dippet.

I love trivia! The first three movies will be Saturday and the fourth and fifth will be on Sunday. Let me know if you want to come over :)

Cutest. Baby. Ever.

We spent the weekend in NY doing wedding related things. I got to spend quality time with my little goddaughter, Abby. She's crawling around now and even standing up on her own!

She is just the cutest thing.

I <3 Pomegranate

A few weeks ago Emily brought home a pomegranate. I've always liked pomegranate juice, but I never actually thought to buy one. I ended up eating at least half of it on my own. It's delicious and fun to eat.

So, I bought my own pomegranate. I've heard that it's supposed to be very good for you, high in antioxidants and all that. I dismantled it this morning and took all the seed out to bring to work for a snack. If you have some free time to pick apart the seeds, I highly recommend picking one up. I think it's really fun.

It's Cold Outside!

It has been SO cold here the past few days, and it's supposed to get worse over the next few. This is pretty much all you hear about on the news, and this morning I learned about how quickly you can get frostbite if you go out in the cold with any part of your skin exposed. This really freaked me out. Apparently it takes 5 minutes of less for frostbite to set in if the windchill is between 0 and -15 degrees. If it's lower than -15 degrees it can take less than a minute. Now I'm pretty much convinced that everyone is going to be frostbitten.

Dane and I are going south this weekend (to NY) where it probably will not be any warmer than it is here. We get to show my family our reception site on Saturday, and maybe the girls will even go dress shopping. We'll see!

Craft Time with Melissa

I keep forgetting to post this, so here it is. When I was home in NY over Christmas my sister informed me she's working on this project (and by working I mean that she had all of the materials sitting in the kitchen for about 3 months and she hadn't touched it yet). I thought it sounded cool, so we got to work and got it done in a few hours.

My neighbor has a sort of business, where she makes containers for weddings and bridal showers for people to put cards in. Anyone that's been to a wedding probably knows the traditional bird cage that people put cards in on the gift table. Well, she makes ones that look like wedding cakes and they are available to rent at a local florist. She offered my sister a chance to make one. This sounded like fun to me, so we dove in.

1. Cut a hole in the top "cake layer" for cards to fit through. Cut a hole in each of the bottom layers (you can have as many as you want) so that cards can fall through to the bottom.

2. Cover all layers in batting, including the box covers. The cover to the top layer should be covered separately, so that the cards can be retrieved from the container after the event is over.

3. Depending on what fabric you use, cover the boxes in a white or off white layer. You can also use the fabric as a cape and sing.

4. Next, choose the fabric you will use for the cake, and cover each layer. Remember, the cover of the top layer should be covered separately.

Side Note: Around now we realized we had a hot glue gun. This was a huge relief because we had been working with fabric glue, which worked great, but got ours hands covered.

5. Attach the layers, and viola! A fake cake to put cards in. We didn't quite finish. There will be silver ribbon around the bottom of each layer and a few other flourishes before it's complete, but the hard part is over!

I will definitely be making one of these for my wedding in our colors. It's fun and different than the traditional bird cage. Enjoy!

Project 365

Once again, Sam has opened my eyes to a fun project. This is a big year and I want to remember it all, so I'm going to be doing Project 365. You take a picture a day for a year. I think it's going to be an awesome way to look back on the year, see those things that were important to me, and view each day a little differently. I'm really excited about this!

This idea came from the blog of Becky Higgins, and she offers so many ways to create ways to appreciate memories and moments. Sam also graciously offered me a Project 365 Kit, which has everything I'll need to make a pretty amazing scrapbook for the year. I'm also going to have another link to all my pictures for Project 365 here in my links section, if anyone wants to see what's going on every day. I know it will help keep me organized if I post a picture a day.

I can't wait to see this come together!

New Wedding Site

I feel like I've been putting a lot of wedding stuff up on this blog. Even though that's a big part of my life right now, I don't want everyone to get bored with it. So I started a Wedding Site at Shutterfly to keep everything together in one place. It'll be a great way to keep our relatives and friends who live in different places up to date on our planning! We get so many questions about the wedding, why not put it all in one place that you can look at if you're interested?

Breathe

Sam has once again shown me some fun things to do with my word for 2009. Create a Wordle at wordle.net. Here's mine!

What's your word?

I love this idea. My friend Sam pointed it out on her blog, and it comes from Ali Edwards and her blog.

Here's the idea. Pick one word that describes 2009, or that you want to be part of your year. It can be something you strive for, something that moves you, or something that doesn't even make sense right now. This is the message from Ali on her blog:

"Can you identify a single word that sums up what you want for yourself in the next year?

It can be something tangible or intangible. It could be a thought or a feeling or an emotion. It can be singular or plural. The key is to find something that has personal meaning for you. This is not your mother's word or your spouse's word or your child's word - this is YOUR word.

One little word can have big meaning in your life if you allow yourself to be open to the possibilities. And here's one thing that is totally interesting: sometimes a word will pop into your brain and it will not make any sense to you right now. Give it some time. Let it percolate a bit. I have often found that our hearts speak to us in very unique ways. Maybe this is a word you need to hear but just aren't ready for it yet. Again, be open to the possibilities."

My word will be Breathe. Everyone that knows me well knows I can get stressed out easily. I have a big year ahead of me, full of exciting things and changes! But changes always come with stress, and I want to enjoy every second of all the amazing things I'm going to experience in 2009. The word breathe just says so much to me. I feel like it's something that can help keep me grounded and in the moment so that I always remember the important little things. And here's a quote I found to go along with it:

Fear less, hope more; eat less, chew more; whine less, breathe more; talk less, say more; hate less, love more; and all good things are yours. ~Swedish Proverb

Here's to 2009!

P.S. Look at the fun things you can do with your word! I LOVE these necklaces. So beautiful. And what a cute doodle!

What's a Kissing Menu?

Well ladies and gents, I've gotten quite a few questions about what on earth a kissing menu is. I first saw the idea on Style Me Pretty, a wedding blog. Everyone has been to a wedding where the guests clink their glasses as a signal for the bride and groom to kiss. This is usually cute the first few times, but after people have a few drinks in them the clinking doesn't seem to stop. As an alternative to this, a kissing menu will be placed on each table with a list of options that guests can choose from if they would like to see Dane and I kiss at the reception. It can really be whatever you want. This one came from Style Me Pretty's featured wedding of Paloma and Scott:

KISSING MENU
To request a kiss between Paloma & Scott, A clink of a glass is simply a not. We have a list from which to choose, (for which you may need a little booze).

The Serenade – Sing a song with “LOVE” in the lyrics.
The Brave – Group performance of either the Chicken Dance or the dance from “Thriller.”
The Patriotic - Sing either Paloma or Scott’s country’s national anthem.
The Irish Blessing – Recite a limerick about love.
The Historic – Six and some years ago, Paloma and Scott’s romance began at a small island restaurant. Channel your inner Tony Snell or other Last Resort performers by singing one of their songs.

Here's another one from WeddingBee and the wedding of Alexandra and Jeremy:

The Pomegranate’s Kissing Menu
The better the performance, the longer the kiss!

The Irish Blessing - Recite a limerick regarding love.
The French Toast - Share some time-honored marriage advice.
The Kiss Me Kate - Serenade the bride and groom with a song - preferably song and dance - of your choice.
The Embarrassed Embrace - Share a funny story involving both you and either the bride or groom.

I know we will have a big and fun group of people who will fully take advantage of whatever choices we offer!
